Glassing Grizzlies in Yellowstone

If you are worried about not seeing Montana’s abundant wildlife from a safe distance, worry no longer. In 2019 at Explore Rentals we now carry a new line of Vortex binoculars and Spotting scopes that allow you to view all of our natural wonders from a distance. Whether you are waiting for the Yellowstone wolves to emerge from the timber in the early morning hours or need some quality glass for you next fall hunting trip, we’ve got you covered.

We offer Vortex’s latest version of their Viper HD 10x42 binoculars, Diamondback series 10x42 binoculars, Razor HD 27-60 x 85 spotting scopes, Leica Televid 25-50 x 82 spotting scope, Brunton 11x45 binoculars, and others. Plus tripods and Phone Scopes to compliment our Spotting scopes.

You will thank yourself when you are watching a grizzly tear up berries or elk fighting in Yellowstone.

Which pair of optics will suit you best?

If you’re planning a trip to Yellowstone, you need to bring some optics that allow you to observe the animal at a respectful distance. This isn’t just for your safety, but watching animals behave in their natural environment, you can witness some incredible things.

Everyone has a set of binoculars that fits in your pocket, but leave those at home; it won’t get you anywhere in Yellowstone. What you need are optics specifically designed for wildlife viewing. Our line of Vortex binoculars and Spotting Scopes will allow you to see things you would have missed without them. Although they are similar in what they do, binoculars and spotting scopes have very different situational uses. They can compliment each other when used together properly and can make your Yellowstone experience much more enjoyable.

Binoculars

The binoculars are smaller and more compact. You are able to comfortably wear these around your neck or in the chest-pack to have them easily accessible. Binoculars have a wider field of view. This makes it easier to spot things without having to move the binoculars around too much. Binoculars are the way to go if you plan on hiking.

Explore carries a variety of different range of optics. Our top of the line optics are the Viper HD and Diamondbacks from Vortex. They are all 10x42 and come with a travel case and neck strap. 10x magnification is great for long distance viewing while still having the ability to focus on closer objects.

We also carry Brunton 11x45 binoculars. These are roughly the same size as the Vortex but not as sharp of an image. In addition, we have a few older models of Bushnell binoculars as well.

Spotting Scopes

Spotting scopes are larger and weigh more than the standard pair of binoculars. This makes hiking with the spotting scopes and tripods a nightmare. These spotting scopes are good for viewing far distances without having to hike closer to the animal or object. Looking for animals is much harder with the spotting scope because of the narrow field of view, so scanning the area can be difficult because of the magnification. We have an optional extra phone case that hooks up to your phone to set on the eyepiece. This case lines up the eyepiece with the camera on your phone and allows you to take incredible photos. Spotting scopes are the ticket if you plan on touring most of Yellowstone by vehicle.

At Explore Rentals, we carry spotting scopes from two of the best names in the industry, Leica and Vortex. The Leica Televid 82 has the edge in a few categories. It is better in low light conditions and has more magnification compared to the Vortex Razor HD. The Vortex Razor HD has a better quality image, but these comparisons are so close it’s hard to tell when you look through both of them.

In addition, we have tripods to go with these spotting scopes. While looking through the spotting scope, it needs to be mounted to a tripod or else it is too shaky to visibly see anything. The Phone Skopes are highly recommended to take cool pictures and videos you’ll remember forever. For iPhones we have 5/5s, 6/6s, 7/8, 7+, X/XS, X Max, and XR. For Samsung we have the Galaxy S8 and S9 This is how you can capture close up images or videos of bears or buffalo from your truck. It’s totally worth it.
