Winter Fishing in Montana

A sunny January day fishing on the Beaverhead

WINTER FISHING IN MONTANA

January in Bozeman can be fickle regarding optimal skiing conditions. When “warm” days roll through, I try to make a point to pick up the fishing rod and catch a few fish to scratch that itch. This past weekend’s weather provided that opportunity so a good friend and our dogs decided to go to Dillon, Montana for the day.

We lucked out on this day; only having to share the river with a few muskrats and ducks (the dogs didn’t mind). Temperatures peaked in the high 40’s, and with minimal wind made for a pleasant afternoon. I was still glad to have used a pair of our Simms Rental Waders and Echo fly rod to keep dry and land a handful of nice trout.

At the end of the afternoon it felt nice to put on a different pair of weatherproof pants and get in some long needed casts.
